Stern action will be taken against traders who sell sugar above the controlled price of Rs. 95. Instructions have been given to the relevant authorities to launch island-wide search operations, a press communique from the Minister of Finance Ravi Karunanayake said.

The Minister said the Ministry constantly checks price fluctuations of essential commodities including sugar in the world market and the government is ready to take action to protect the consumer as well as the farming community on the recommendations of the Cabinet Sub Committee appointed to look into the cost of living.
